The Japanese artist Makoto Azuma recently ventured in the Black Rock desert in Nevada, USA to place in space a white Japanese pine bonsai. The project, entitled “Exobiotanica”, was launched on July 15, 2014. To achieve the feat, Makoto collaborated with JP Aerospace, an aeronautical company based in Sacramento that builds and places ships in orbit. The team used helium balloons to send the plants.
The artist also made a beautiful bouquet, made with about 30 varieties of flowers around the world and threw them towards space as well. The bonsai reached a height of 27.98 kilometers, while the bouquet arrived 87,000 feet (26.51 kilometers). Nice way to decorate space, right?
