When his adoptive parents die, Hortense, a young black optometrist who lives in London, feels the need to meet his biological mother, who gave it for adoption as soon as he was born. After several investigations, he manages to meet her. And when he does, his mother, Cynthia, does not turn out to be at all the person she had imagined. As we meet the characters in the plot (Cynthia's brother, his wife and other daughter), we realize the secrets that are stored between them, and that hinder their relationship.
"Secrets and lies" (Secrets and Lies) is a film of the year 1996, directed by Mike Leigh. A drama, not exempt from certain humorous touches, in which it is analyzed without prejudice and without mercy, but also with tenderness and understanding, the relationship between people when in that relationship are events of the past are interposed, behaviors that produce shame or unrecognized errors . A raw look and yet hope. "Secrets and lies" was nominated for an Oscar, and also won the Golden Palm in Cannes, the British Batic Bafta award, a Goya as the best European film, and a Caesar for the best foreign film. Among the great cast of the film, it is worth highlighting Brenda Blethyn (Cynthia), whose work earned him an Oscar nomination, in addition to the award as best actress in the Golden Globes, in Cannes and in the Bafta awards.
A film to think, to reflect on our behaviors and attitudes, especially with the closest people (couple, family, friends). A film that speaks of sincerity, of trust, of naturalness; and how secrets and lies can ruin lives. A jewel that should not be lost.
